The Prehistoric Age · The Three Hans
- People living in Damyang-gun for the first time are traced through stoneware excavated in Jewol-ri, Bongsan-myon. Dolmens found in neighboring villages represent people in the Stone Age lived in, forming a farming- and hunting-centered community using surroundings. Considering the Bronze Age's relics were excavated and ironware and earthenware coffin tombs were buried in the neighborhood of Damyang, including Hawsun, Damyang's residents may know existence of bronze and iron or at least be influenced by them. (Chusungji) written in the 34th year of King Yungjo of the Choson Dynasty writes that there was Sulji-hyun at present Bongan-ri, Mujung-myon in the Three Hans.
Baekje Period
- Called Chujahye-gun and Changpyong located in the northeast Chonnam belonged to Gulji-hyun. It is said that there were 27 countys and 200 castles in the Baekje Period. Damyang was probably one of 27 countys and Geumsung Sansung and Damju Sansung one of 200 castles. Geumsung Sansung was built in the Three Hans, according to (Chusungji).
Unified Silla Period
- Renamed Chusung-gun in the 16th year of King Gyungduk(757). Yulji-hyun in the Baekje Period was changed to Yulwon-hyun and belonged to Chusung-gun and Chanpyung was renamed Giyang-hyun in the King Gyungduk and belonged to Muju(president Kwangju).
Koryo Period
- Chusung-gun was renamed Damju in the 14th year of King Sungjong(995) and had Doryundamsa. It was recalled Damyang-gun, after Doyundamsa abolished and at the same time belonged to Naju with Yulwon-hyun and Changpyung-hyun. It had Gammu in the 2nd year of King Myungjong(1172) and incorporated Wonyul-hyun(present: Wonyul-ri, Geumsung-myon) in the 3rd year of the Gongyang(1391)
Choson Period
- It was promoted to gun in the 4th year of Taejo(1395) thanks to Guksa Jo Gu's home; it became Dohobu by renaming as Damyang in the 13th year of King Taejong; when the whole nation rearranged into 23 bus and 331 guns in the 32nd year of King Gojong it belonged to Namwon-bu; it was changed to Damyang-gun in Kwangmu 9(1905) of the Korea Empire and a part of abolished Okgwa-gun was incorporated into Damyang-gun in the 2nd year of King Sungjo(1908).
Japanese Ruling Period
- 13 myons by incorporating with a part of abolished Changpyung-gun in 1914. 12 myons by uniting Mu-myon and Jung-myon into Mujung-myon and Guam-myon was renamed Bongsan-myon in 1918. With promoting Damyang-myon to Damyang-up in 1943, it has had 1-up and 11-myon system.
Since the Republic of Korea
- Regulation of the Name of Damyang-gun's Dong and Ri and District(No. 2) and Regulation of Damyang-gun Removing Grave and Clean Water(No. 3) were instituted and announced officially as of Oct. 1, 1961 and Damyang-gun governed 1 up, 11 myons, and 139 ris. Two ris were reduced(137 ris) in 1973 because Sangsung-ri and Chunghong-ri were submerged due to building Damyangho. Damyang governed 1 up, 11 myons, 137 ris, and 294 villages as of June 30, 1998.
